What is a fallacy? A fallacy is a bad argument that nevertheless tends to persuade. Why? Because persuasion works in both rational and non-rational ways. - non-rational forms of persuasion are sometimes called rhetoric or rhetorical persuasion. - we can be persuaded in a non-rational way or we can be misled by an argument. Ways in which we can be persuaded by a bad argument: 1. We may mistake an invalid structure for a valid one. 2. We may accept premises that we should not accept. 3. We may overlook a hidden premise which is suspect. 4. One or more premises may distract us away from other, suspect premises. 5. We may confuse emotion with reason. 6. We may confuse the merits of the argument with the person making the argument. - all fallacies can be criticized according to the methods for criticizing arguments we have already looked at. - you are learning fallacies as a set of tools to help you recognize common problems. - the important thing is to be able to recognize good and bad arguments and be able to
