LECTURE: ISSUE ANALYSIS II - issue analysis assignment due Jan 31 (two weeks). - this will be the basis for your Position Paper, due Feb. 21. - I will return the issue analysis on Feb. 7 with comments, so you can take these comments into account when writing your paper. - next week we’re going to have a lecture on how to write a position paper. - issue analysis topics. - questions on that? Issue Analysis Techniques Continued - last week I explained what issue analysis is and what it’s for. - we practiced the first three steps of issue analysis on an issue which I proposed: should we legalize prostitution? - now we’re going to continue, doing the final three steps on the same issue. 4. Develop the considerations in 3) into arguments: - considerations are basically shorthand for arguments. - they are point-form ideas which can be expanded into arguments. - we begin by listing the considerations in favour of the various positions because this lets us get a rough idea of the kind of support for the positions and how they relate to one another. - sometimes we won’t move beyond this step; sometimes this step is enough to give us a good
