MECH430 Instrumentation and Measurements Najib Metni – Ali Ammouri – Elie Kfouri Module 2 Summer 2008 Page 1 Introduction to National Instrument’s LabVIEW Create SubVIs, Use of Structures and Build Arrays LEARNING OBJECTIVES o Create and save a sub VI for later use. o Use While Loop, Shift Registers, Sequence and Case Structures. o Build arrays. RESOURCES o Lab Modules on Moodle o LabVIEW 8.2 tutorial on Moodle o National instrument website: http://www.ni.com VOCABULARY SubVI – A VI used in the block diagram of another VI – comparable to a subroutine Hierarchy window – Window that graphically displays the hierarchy of VIs and sub VIs Top-level VI – The VI at the top of the VI hierarchy. This term distinguishes a VI from its sub VIs VI Library – Special file that contains a collection of related VIs Case Structure – A conditional branching control structure that executes one and only one of its subdiagrams, based on specific inputs. Coercion – The automatic conversion t change the numeric representation of a data element. Conditional terminal – The terminal of a While Loop that contains a Boolean value that determines whether the loop continues to performs iterations Count Terminal – The terminal of a For Loop that executes its subdiagram a set number of times Data dependency – The concept that block diagram nodes do not execute until data is available at all the node input For Loop – Iterative loop structure that executes its subdiagram a set number of times Formula node – Node that executes formulas entered as a text Frames – Diagrams associated with Sequence structures that look like frames of film and control the execution order of the program Iteration terminal – The terminal of a For Loop or While Loop that contains the current number of completed iterations Sequence local – Terminal that passes data between the frames of a Sequence structure Sequence structure – Program control structure that executes its subdiagram in numeric order Shift register – Optional mechanism in Loop Structures used to pass the value of a variable from one iteration of a loop to a subsequent iteration

MECH430 Instrumentation and Measurements Najib Metni – Ali Ammouri – Elie Kfouri Module 2 Summer 2008 Page 2 Structure – Program control element, such as a Sequence, Case, For Loop, or While Loop Subdiagram – Block diagram within the border of a structure Tunnels – Relocatable connection points for wires from outside and inside the structure While Loop – Loop structure that repeats a section of code until a Boolean condition is False Array – Ordered and indexed list of elements of the same type Array Shell – Front panel object that contains the elements of an array. It consists of an index display, a data object window, and an optional label Array size – Array function that returns the number of elements in the input array Array Subset – Array function that returns a portion of an array Auto-indexing
