Chapter 17: Gene expression:  is the process by which DNA directs the synthesis of proteins Genes program protein synthesis via genetic messages in the form of mRNA. Transcription : is the synthesis of RNA under the direction of DNA. Information is simply copied from  molecules. DNA strand provides template for sequence of RNA. Messenger RNA : RNA molecule that carries a genetic message from the DNA to the protein-synthesizing  machinery of cell. Translation : is the synthesis of polypeptide under direction of mRNA. Cell must translate the base sequence  of an mRNA molecule into the amino acid sequence of a polypeptide. Ribosomes : particles that facilitate linking of amino acids into polypeptide chains.
