Hist 2112 Lecture 2 6/1/10 Klu Klux Klan Founded during Reconstruction following Civil War o Purpose was to discourage AA voters o President Grant Stamped out clan movement by passing laws and incarceration Remerged in 1920’s o Nativist attitude o Hated anyone that wasn’t Anglo-Saxon and Protestant. Bourbans Readjusters o Born into Bourban class, but do not share the same political views. o Wanted to see southerners excel and develop. o Henry Grady: Atlanta Constitution Wanted new progressive south. Cotton States exposition 1895 World Fair. o James B. Duke Tobacco man Invested heavily in education Duke University. Share Cropping o Land owner rents out land to former slave. o At Harvest time workers give land owner a percentage of the crop. o In 1900 70% of population was sharecropping. o Was an indentured form of slavery o Endless cycle of poverty
