Lecture 4 Indian Removal Act Chief Joseph Chief of Nez Perce Made attempt to march tribe into Canada to avoid being sent to reservation Made it Bear Pass Mountain before they were caught by U.S. army. “I will fight no more forever” Wounded Knee 1890 Soux were living on reservation but were starving Left reservation looking for food. Ended up at an American Fort looking for help o Set up a camp outside of the fort and performed a ghost dance. o U.S saw the ghost dance as a war dance o Soldiers killed all of them. Helen Hunt Jackson Scholar who had close relationship with many NA(Native Americans) Published “A Century of Dishonor” 1881 o Examined all treaties/agreements with white and Native American Ramona 1883 o Fiction o Had a significant impact on how NA was being treated. o Humanized NA like Uncle Toms cabin did for Slaves during Civil War.
