MY IMMIGRATION STORY Were your ancestors: Voluntary immigrants: they made a decision to come, and came to the U.S. without being forced to (most white immigrant groups, some Asian Americans, smaller numbers of other groups) Involuntary immigrants: they came to the U.S. because they were enslaved, or they lived on land that was conquered and became part of the United States. (most African-Americans, some Latinos, some Asian Americans, all Native Americans) If voluntary immigrants: My ancestors arrived from what country (ies?) When did they arrive? Were they pushed here (because they had to flee their homeland), or pulled (for economic opportunity), or a combination of both? What was their experience in this country? Was it easy? Hard? Did they experience discrimination in school, jobs, housing?

Unformatted text preview: How many generations did it take them to fully learn English? If/when did they assimilate? What did they gain? What did they lose? Almost all immigrant groups face discrimination when they first arrive in the United States. For many (though not all) voluntary immigrants, this discrimination fades after a few generations. Do you still experience discrimination today because of your immigration story? If involuntary immigrants: How did you ancestors come to be part of the United States? What did they experience in that process? Was their experience easy? hard? Did they face discrimination? Did they learn English? Become assimilated? What did they gain in that process? What did they lose? Do you still experience discrimination today because of your immigration story?...
