Hume’s account of property Why there is no need for property conventions o Stop acting aggressively against others and others will stop acting aggressively against you Why we are able to implement property conventions o People are able to act in a cooperative way without the need for a sovereign o Hume doesn’t think we’re selfish as Hobbes does and because of that we are able to obey these property conventions These property conventions are in our self interest Hume says we are not as self interested as Hobbes thinks we are and so we are able to obey these property conventions o People are able to do things for other people as well such as their family, friends, etc People can be non selfish and Hume says its related to property conventions because it’s precisely when we live in families that we are able to learn the advantages of property conventions and when we go into society, we are able to see society’s rules about property conventions They are willing to obey the rules of property because of family
