EAS 1600 HP Fall 2008-11-11 Worksheet #6– Chemistry Name(s)__________________________________________________ Today we will play a little catch up and work through these problems in class as a group. 1) What is the oxidation number of sulfur in the following compounds: SO 2 , H 2 SO 4 , HSO 4 - SO 2 (+4) H 2 SO 4 (+6) HSO 4 - (+6) 2) What is the oxidation number of carbon in the following compounds CH 4 , CH 2 O, CO 2 , HCO 3 - , and CO 3 -2 CH 4 (-4) CH 2 O (0) CO 2 (+4) HCO 3 - (+4) CO 3 -2 (+4) 3) Which of the compounds above will give off the most energy per gram when combusted (rapidly oxidized or burned) Methane (CH 4 ). Lowest oxidation number. 4) What do you think is a good definition of organic and inorganic carbon? Organic carbon is reduced carbon (not completely oxidized). Carbon oxidation number < +4. It will release energy in combustion. Inorganic carbon oxidation number = +4. You can’t combust it with oxygen and get energy out. 5)
