New Standard for WWW Images? Google launched new WebP graphics format last week. Claims that file size if 40% less than JPEG (dominant standard) with same quality. WebP: 36,154 bytes Why would Google want to change the standard for images on the World Wide Web? Wants to make the web faster, and lighten the JPEG: 47,768 bytes a s o a e e eb as e , a d g e e load on its data centers. Estimates that 65% of bytes on the web are images. JPEG Image Production (software, cameras) Image Viewing (browsers) Building support for WebP into Chrome. Even if no one else adopts it, Google’s own properties can serve it to Chrome users, reducing their load. 4 Conversion tool lets webmaster “multi-home.” If browser making the request supports WebP, convert images to WebP and serve. Otherwise, send JPEG.
