Lecture 12 11/03/2008 08:31:00 Volcanoes Plate Boundaries Ring of Fire 1883 – Krakatoa – Biggest, Loudest explosion ever. Heard 2000 miles away. o Produced large Tsunami’s Phreatic – Water gets into the explosion  Morphology Volcano – Mountainous accumulation of material built from repeated  eruptions. Caldera – a collapsed volcano into its magma chamber leaving a crater like  structure above ground. Volcanic Neck – The inner chamber of the volcano, the vent that everything  comes out of.  This is visible after everything on the outside is eroded away. Materials Erupted Lava o Basalt Flows Gases – Volatiles o 1-5% of Lava o 70% of the volatiles is water o 15% CO2 o Lake Nyos – 1986 – killed 1700 people. Suffocated by CO2 cloud. Pyroclastic Eruption
