Public Polling and Survey Lecture 1 Public Opinion PO: Who is the public? o Opinion Attitude: what u access to determine your opinion. Latent(just exists) Context: Cognition: reasons why u would make a decision Is not a Belief Among those concerned with gov’t public opinion has always been important. o Has not always been measurable It used to be a broader idea. It wasn’t about what individuals thought More concerned about what groups thought Ex: Aristotle Rousseau, Plato. o Classical Public opinion Wanted to make sure it could control the people so they could stay in power. Time of Monarchs: Legitimacy o Rulers worked hard to maintain their legitimacy. Support among the people. o Monarchs used Divinity to establish Legitimacy. God appointed a particular person to become king o Early United States o Public Administration: Gov’t is a science and should be run by those trained in that science. General public is uneducated so the gov’t shouldn’t respond to those people.
