Fear First fears6 to 12 months Stranger Anxiety8 to 12 months Crying Originally develops as a reflex response and slowly becomes more controllable. In infancy, they cry due to physical needs or for no apparent reason. Later on, crying is related to cognitive and emotional conditions. There are different types of cries: Basic cry Anger cry Pain cry Hunger cy Anger and Temper Tantrums Development of anger Infants develop a sense of control. Angry crying occurs with frustration when they dont like something. Infants become more aware of their limitations. This causes more frustration and anger. Slowly we begin to see more temper tantrums. Self-Conscious Emotions Emerge during the middle of the second year. Need adult help regarding when to feel them and how to handle them. Self-conscious emotions Shame Embarrassment Guilt Envy Pride Self-Conscious Emotions Key advances needed for self-conscious emotions: Conscious awareness of self as different from others. Recognition of certain rules, standards, or expectations. Ability to evaluate their own behavior. Gender differences Girls show more shame at a failed task (begins in toddlerhood and remains through adulthood). Self-Regulation Strategies for adjusting our emotional state to a comfortable level of intensity so we can accomplish goals. Infants have a limited capacity to regulate their emotions They get easily overwhelmed and are soothed by caregivers....
