Early adolescence 11-14 years  Late adolescence 15-19 years  Puberty Lots of biological events that lead up to an adult-size Perspectives on Adolescence  Historical perspective Social and legal reforms changed the way we defined adolescence. EX: Laws distinguishing adults from juveniles There was a postponement in adult responsibilities.  Biological perspective View that puberty = heightened emotionality, conflict, and defiance. Perspectives on Adolescence  Cultural/Social perspective Rites of passage EX: drivers license, Bar/Bat Mitzvah  Different thoughts on adolescence. US teens are expected to act independently Chinese teens are expected to be dependent on family and community.  In less industrialized countries: Brain Development  Pruning Continues and leads to greater specialization Related to improvements in cognitive functioning.  Neurons are more sensitive to neurotransmitters. Experiences are more intense. Pleasure and novelty seeking occurs which tends to lead to an increase in taking drugs.  Several systems experience changes. Hormonal Changes  Starts by ___8 or 9______ years.  Major changes are caused by secretions of growth hormone and thyroxine.  Sex hormones Estrogens- More in girls Androgens- More in boys; specifically testosterone. Girls and boys have both types of sex hormones. Growth spurts  Affects all parts of the body but different parts grow at different rates. Hands, feet, head and nose grow more quickly.  Body proportions change and become more sexually defined.  Girls Starts around 10; tapers off around 13. Menarche Sex Differences in Boys Girls Growth Spurt Starts age 12 Starts age 10 Proportions Shoulders broaden Longer legs Hips broaden Muscle-Fat Makeup Gain more muscle, aerobic efficiency Gain more fat Puberty  __Reproduction__ becomes possible....
