Julie Gilbert MUET200 , Section 0101 Dr . Boden Sandstrom Patricia Vergara April 14 , 2008 Rai Response Paper Rai is a style of traditional music native to North Africa , specifically Algeria . Although historically it is one of this region’s classical styles of music , within the last 20 years it has become globalized and in effect modernized . It has evolved from its original context and has been used by many groups to express political , social and emotional opinions . Rai has seen a long evolution from originally being the ritualistic time-honored music of Algeria to a globally embraced popular style of music . This evolution portrays the cultural and societal changes that have occurred over the 20 th century . During the Algerian civil war , Rai gave the marginalized peoples of Algeria a voice and helped facilitate the forging of their identity . Algerians used it to convey their feelings of oppression , dissatisfaction with the current state of affairs, and many other societal issues
