Argumentation 02/02/11 Argumentation Analysis – Reconstruction Categorical Syllogism (Deductive): Valid vs Invalid All A is B, o And all C is A o Therefore All C is B Another example: o “Sunbathing is dangerous because it carries the risk of skin cancer” All sunbathing (S) carries the risk of skin cancer (C) And, all things that carry the risk of skin cancer (C) are dangerous (D) Therefore, all sunbathing (S) is dangerous (D) Another example o “ any food that can be kept on the shelf for several weeks contains additives, and is therefore bad for your health” All foods that can be kept of the shelf for weeks (S) are foods that contain additives (A) Therefore, all foods that can be kept on the shelf for weeks (S) are bad for your health (B) What is the missing link? And, all foods that contain additives (A) are bad for your health Another example o “in zoos animals may be bred, thus no zoo should keep animals in cramped conditions” All zoos (Z) are places in which animals may be bred (B) Therefore, no zoos should be places in which animals are kept in cramped conditions (C) What is the missing link? No zoos (Z) should be kept in places where animals are kept in cramped conditions Another example o “None of the Egyptian protestors are loyal to President Mubarak, so none of them are against a free democracy” No Egyptian protestors (P) are people who are loyal to President Mubarak (M) Therefore, no Egyptian protestors (P) are against a free democracy (D) What is the missing link? No Egyptian protestors (P) are against a free democracy (D)
