Main findings and conclusions A. boys’ education not systematically affected by sex makeup of siblings B. girls raised only with brothers get (on average) significantly more education than girls raised with some sisters (ceteris paribus) 2. Alternative theories and models A. parental preferences (1) parents may want to equate marginal returns to education for each child (maximizing total return), so girls might get less education (e.g., if they’ll work less) -- but sibs shouldn’t affect investment in any given child if they don’t affect the return (2) If there are borrowing constraints sibs could affect investment in a given child: presence of sons could reduce investment in daughters (3) if parents are averse to inequality in kids’ earnings, and if girls have lower returns, might invest more in girls’ education B. differential costs: girls might get less education if they cost more
