February 8th, 2011 Lecture Five: Brain Development Heeb Experiment experiment done in the 50s done with rats about brain development EC rats (environmentally complex) IC rats (individual cages) SC (social exposure to others -- no environment interaction) EC rats outperformed all others in activities -- the EC rats had better brain develop- ment, more neuron connections -- cerebral cortex was heavier and thicker in the EC than other groups The Neuron the basic unit of the brain’s information system cell body : contain enzyme that keep neuron functioning dendrites: end of the cell, receive input form other neurons -- conduct input axon: long fiber of the cell, conducts electrical information/signal from cell body to connections with other neurons where dendrites (of one cell) and axons (of another) meet is the synapse Glial Cells form a myelin sheath around certain axons provide insulation that increases the speed and efficiency of information transmis- sion

As a current student on this bumpy collegiate pathway, I stumbled upon Course Hero, where I can find study resources for nearly all my courses, get online help from tutors 24/7, and even share my old projects, papers, and lecture notes with other students.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
