February 8th, 2011 Lecture Five: Brain Development Heeb Experiment experiment done in the 50s done with rats about brain development EC rats (environmentally complex) IC rats (individual cages) SC (social exposure to others -- no environment interaction) EC rats outperformed all others in activities -- the EC rats had better brain develop- ment, more neuron connections -- cerebral cortex was heavier and thicker in the EC than other groups The Neuron the basic unit of the brain’s information system cell body : contain enzyme that keep neuron functioning dendrites: end of the cell, receive input form other neurons -- conduct input axon: long fiber of the cell, conducts electrical information/signal from cell body to connections with other neurons where dendrites (of one cell) and axons (of another) meet is the synapse Glial Cells form a myelin sheath around certain axons provide insulation that increases the speed and efficiency of information transmis-
