History Originally called “Personnel Management”. Peter Drucker (1954) – coined the term “human resources”. Michigan model. Harvard model.

Michigan Model – emphasized the link between human resource strategy and business strategy. Employees are considered an organizational resource like any other. Harvard Model – employees viewed as more than another resource. Viewed as equal participants whose understanding and commitment to the business strategy is critical.

Important HR Tasks Evaluating employees. Motivating employees. Promoting employees. Retaining employees. Selecting good employees may be the most important function.

Job Analysis and Job Description Should include description of tasks and roles. Should include input from current employees and other managers. Can then formulate a formal job description. Should include general position overview, major measurable responsibilities, who the person reports to and who the person supervises.
