Motor Control: The Physiology of Muscle Contraction Among other things, we breathe, talk, move, and respond to threats by the contraction of muscles in our body. The mechanism of muscle contraction is one of the most beautiful examples of "structure-function", where the structure of an organ defines its function. A muscle is a bundle of muscle fibers , which are single cells and the functional subunit of a muscle. each fiber has multiple nuclei, which shows that it is derived from many cells during development each fiber contains many subcellular organelles termed myofibrils , which in turn are composed of longitudinal rods of two major proteins: thin filaments composed of two strands of actin wound around each other thick filaments composed of an array of myosin , which is arranged in a single long strand composed of many club-like myosin molecules Except for cardiac muscle (heart) and smooth muscle (which is in the intestine, blood vessels, and some other organs), the muscles in your body are termed striated , because they appear to have stripes when viewed under the microscope .
