Chem 970 Spring 2011 Maleckar Exam 1 Review Sheet Chapter 6: Thermochemistry - First Law of Thermodynamics: energy is conserved or energy is neither created nor destroyed, but it can be transformed or there is no free lunch! - enthalpy (H) is a measure of the energy (heat) absorbed or generated by a reaction - we can’t easily know that absolute enthalpy in a system, but it is easy to measure the change in H, ΔH, for a reaction - if ΔH is positive, the reaction in endothermic - if ΔH is negative, the reaction is exothermic - be able to calculate ΔH by these methods: - using the enthalpies given ΔH rxn = ΣΔH products - ΣΔH reactants - using Hess’s Law (manipulate the reactions – puzzle method) - using bond enthalpies – Ch 9.10 ΔH rxn = Σ(bond enthalpies of bonds broken) - Σ(bond enthalpies of bonds formed) - be able to apply this to food examples….1kcal = 1000cal = 1 Calorie - be able to use specific heat and enthalpies of fusion/vaporization to calculate the energy needed to heat/cool substances and change phases (Ch 11.7) - be able to do calorimetry problems q (energy) = mSΔT - be able to do bomb calorimeter and coffee cup calorimeter problems - be able to use the Clausius-Clapeyron Equation to relate different vapor pressures to different temperatures Chapter 12: Solution Chemistry - a solution is a homogenous mixture of two or more substances; these substances can be in any combination of phases - the solute is the substance present in the smaller amount; the solvent is the substance present in the greater amount - solvation is dynamic physical process, not a chemical one - solvation is a balance between the affinity the solvent has for itself vs. the affinity it has for the
