August Revolution- people say that anti-Comm movements after this were dead (had no chance thereafter) Domino theory-   all Southeast Asian countries are the same! If 1 falls to Communism,  they will ALL fall to Communism!! NOT TRUE!! Only Vietnam fell to Communism! If VN became Comm, all other nations would fall as well! VN was the key  because it was the closest to China! This would deprive U.S. of valuable materials and  create a global momentum of Comm (Japan, Europe, etc.) Intelligencia-  Western-educated middle-class people actively concerned with politics;  were Confucian and had VN patriotism; desperate to find something to make sense of  the world! Frustrated by foreign rule!   modern VN politics Created VN Communism!!! Leaders of the revolution! But they had no support  from the peasants yet! Francophiles-  nationalists dismissed as collaborators / traitors by Comms. Like anti-French, they were committed to building a modern VN but they had  a different strategy o Believed continued French tutelage was needed for VN; anti-French  thought VN could soon master Western technology WITHOUT  continued political involvement from France Included people with narrow social interests that needed the French to  flourish: Mandarins, VN Catholics, and those in cities Few benefited from French colonialism VN that supported colonial rule by the French (aristocracy/elite) Constitutionalist Party-  Saigon/Cochinchina – successful in modern French  economy (doctors, businessmen, etc.); some were French citizens Support French rule, mostly in Cochinchina; wanted more participation of VN  government but only from people in upper class Achieve modern VN through loose government by France but mostly  autonomous

Objective: expand VN control over the economy and political administration  especially in CC Wanted more power for colonial council, expand schools, curb Chinese  businessmen 1930s: sided with France instead of radicals   lost significance and faded  away Crippled by 3 obstacles 1. French refused to reciprocate concessions   weakened credibility 2. alienated the population because they were unsympathetic to VN cultural  traditions; dismissed VN past as being saved by the French   this reasoning had little  appeal to patriotic VN 3. economic and political program was too elitist   most of the population was  illiterate!

As a current student on this bumpy collegiate pathway, I stumbled upon Course Hero, where I can find study resources for nearly all my courses, get online help from tutors 24/7, and even share my old projects, papers, and lecture notes with other students.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
