5/6 Colin Goostree CE2803 2/3/11 MTBE use to be used as an additive to gasoline. It contributed to 98% of the total gasoline produced. The USA has outlawed the use of MTBE in recent years though. Even though MTBE is an extremely dangerous substance to drinking water, it is beneficial to air quality because it reduces CO emissions. The oxygenate content in MTBE is what reduces the emissions. The main pathway for MTBE was through car emissions from gasoline. It was a cheap alternative to meet air quality standards at the time.
