Ephedra and the FDA’s ban on Ephedra The beginning of a new year brings about countless new resolutions that people all over the world commit to follow and obey. Breaking habits, beginning new journeys, and improving one’s self image seem to be the most popular resolutions. In the United States of America, where the obesity rate is higher than that of any other country, starting a diet and losing weight can be found on most American’s resolution list. In the year of 2000, the goal to lose weight was no different for one Caucasian woman in her mid forties, but her choice to lose the extra pounds was made at the cost of her safety, health, and even life when she chose to use the weight loss supplement Ephedra (Fleming 2007). Fleming, a doctor in Columbia, Missouri, reports that one of his patients, a Caucasian woman in her mid-forties saw Fleming after wanting to lose weight. Fleming advised the patient to go on a strict diet, and he continued to monitor her heart and other vitals throughout her diet. After a few months, the woman began losing weight more rapidly than she had been losing weight in the first few months of the diet. During a
