Ivan Ivanov APUSH Wright, 8 February 5th, 2011 Chapters 26, 28, 29 Outline 22. Progressive Era A. Right around the beginning of the twentieth century, many middle-class reformers actively began pursuing better life conditions by the means of various reforms. Many of the reformers were immigrants, who wanted to expose dangerous working conditions faced by factory and coal mine workers, as well as child labor. 1. The progressives felt like they deserved a better life. They wanted the government to react faster and better according to the people’s needs. Their main goals included from demands for better housing and living conditions for the urban poor to women suffrage. Progressives saw city bosses and saloons as a bad impact and therefore had to be removed. 2. Muckrakers were technically one of the main thrusts of the progressive movement. The media was now taking a step forward and revealing every dirty social evil there was to report. At the beginning of the twentieth century, popular magazines like the Cosmopolitan began publishing articles about corrupt congressmen, alliances between businesses and government, money trusts and railroad barons. These articles had a great deal of pushing the progressive era forward because it made it easier for the reforms to take place. However, in order to avoid heat, these articles had to be verified and could cost up to three thousand for just one article. 3. Social Gospel was a movement during the progressive era based on religion. Ministers relied on Christianity to make a point that in the time of railroad barons and rich people, wealth had to be shared with others, especially the needy. The idea was that everyone should support each other in this case including free education, affordable housing and health care as well as other benefits. B. Municipal, state, and local reforms had to take place in order for the progressives to regain control from the people of “interests”. One of the initiative plans included people proposing their own legislation. This in fact be known as the referendum and still exists
