WRT102 Jeffrey Green The City of Robots – Umberto Eco Contemporary culture is full of recreations. Eco argues that we create these realistic inventions in an effort to find something that is better than real which gives us things that are more exciting, more inspiring and generally more interesting than what we encounter in everyday life. Umberto Eco toured America to experience imitations and duplications. The essay “The City of Robots,” made it sound more like science fiction. However, it turned out to be a cultural criticism. He was saying that people created fake history, fake art, fake nature and fake cities. He also visited the "absolutely fake cities," Disneyland and Disney World, which have, with their re-created main streets, imitation castles and lifelike, animatronic robots. He takes a boat ride through artificial caves, where he sees scenes of pirates sacking a city, and he travels through a ghost story which is the Haunted Mansion.
