Consideration of medical problems in the context of evolution is a relatively  new concept “Darwinian Medicine” o Does not ask how to treat patient o Why is the body designed in such as way that makes us vulnerable To Disease To Aging To Physical Ailments o Basic explanations arise Proximal Evolutionary/ Ultimate causation o Complete understanding comes from both types of causes “Ultimate”  Causes Of Adaptation Of Maladaptation Humans were shaped by natural selection Most human traits are adaptations Include defenses activated during illness Natural selection has well known restraints Some symptoms are caused by pathogens Evolutionary explanations for medical problems o Trade-offs and compromises Birth weight
