Week 5: February 3, 2011 Media Effects on Sexuality and Sexual Relationships 15. Eyal, K., & Kunkel, D. (2008). The effects of sex in television drama shows on emerging adults’ sexual attitudes and moral judgments. In this study, 110 college freshman were used to test the effects of exposure to sexual TV content on emerging adults’ sexual attitudes and moral judgments. They were randomly assigned to watch shows that portrayed either positive or negative outcomes of sex—Dawson’s Creek, 90210, and Party of Five. The study tests the effects immediately after exposure to the two episodes and the persistence of the effects after 2 weeks. With a pretest questionnaire and posttest manipulation, findings indicate that the exposure to programs with negative consequences of sex leads to more negative attitudes and more negative moral judgments of people engaged in this. However, those who viewed positive consequences did not exhibit more positive attitudes toward sex. I really liked how this study utilized television programs that students could relate to in age and probably already had an invested interest in. I think that this study would have had a more powerful effect if high school students were included in the sample. College students are more so influenced by their peers and the environment they are in when experiencing nightlife than by the TV they watch. I think TV has a stronger effect on high school students. Would results be significantly different if participants viewed both of the dramas? How “explicit” were the shows watched by the participants and are they judged by a panel of coders? 70% of the participants were female; therefore the results could be different with a larger male perspective. Would the results be different if comedies or action shows were used and not dramas? 16. Eyal, K., Kunkel, D., Biely, E., & Finnerty, K. (2007).
