Learning Objectives Be able to discuss the different metabolic styles of the bacterial types listed on slide 5. Explain the difference between sulfate reducing bacteria and sulfur oxidizing bacteria. Recognize the importance of Clostridium, Lactic Acid Bacteria and Propionibacterium in industrial and food-processing fermentation reactions. Describe three of the four types of photosynthetic anaerobes (also see Lecture 12). Explain one way in which bacteria can help extract precious metals from ores. Be able to sketch the nitrogen cycle (slide 16). Place on it the following organisms: nitrogen fixing bacteria, nitrifying bacteria, denitrifying bacteria, and the following reaction products: N 2 , NH 4 + , NO 3 - , NO 2 - Explain two ways in which nitrogen-fixing bacteria protect nitrogenase from oxygen damage. List two Genera of nitrogen-fixing bacteria. Explain why Pseudomonas can occupy many metabolic niches in multiple environments. Understand how Deinococcus can withstand very high levels of radiation. Describe the difference between an endospore and a cyst. Be able to identify the unique metabolic niche of the following bacteria: Myxobacteria, Streptomyces, Caulobacter, Bdellovibrio, Photobacterium, and Agrobacterium Know that the Ti plasmid has applications in genetic engineering of plants.
