Unformatted text preview: Hallucinogens Hallucinogens are drugs that cause altered states in perception and feeling. They include natural substances and chemically manufactured ones. In nature you have the peyote cactus (containing mescaline) and psilocybin mushrooms, both of which induce hallucinations. Chemically manufactured ones include: o DMT (dimethyltryptamine) o LSD (lysergic acid diethylamide) o PCP (phencyclidine) o A variety of other "designer" or "club" drugs including: o MDA (methylene-dioxyamphetamine) o MDMA(methylenedioxymethamphetamine) o Ketamine o GHB/GBH (Gama Hydroxy Butyrate) o Nexus (2C-5) Hallucinogens have powerful mind-altering effects that can change how the brain perceives time, everyday reality, and the surrounding environment. They affect regions and structures in the brain that are responsible for coordination, thought processes, hearing, and sight. They can cause the user to hear voices, see images, and feel sensations that do not exist. Hallucinogens, like inhalants, vary so greatly in their chemical structure that it is difficult to nail down all of their specific effects on the brain and body. Mescaline is the most active drug found in peyote; it affects the serotonin levels in the brain. Native Americans have used it, historically in spiritual ceremonies. Within a half hour to two hours (depending on the dose), the user begins to feel euphoric, with each of the senses intensified, followed by hallucinations. The hallucinations may last for a few hours, and the general effects may persist for up to nine or ten hours. The high is often persist for up to nine or ten hours....
