Marijuana Marijuana is usually smoked rolled in a joint (sometimes referred to as a blunt or sherm), packed into an emptied out-cigarette, out of a pipe, or out of a bong, and can also be eaten. When smoked, it has a sweet, thick, lingering odor. Shortly after inhaling/ingesting marijuana, intoxication begins. Some people feel nothing at all when they smoke marijuana for the first time. While most people feel relaxed or high when smoking marijuana, some people will feel sudden bouts of anxiety and paranoia. The blood vessels in the eyes expand and the eyes look red. The user will have a dry mouth and feel very thirsty or hungry. Physiologically, THC binds to and activates specific receptors, known as cannabinoid receptors. There are many of these receptors in parts of the brain that control memory, thought, concentration, time, sensory perception, and coordinated movements. THC changes brain messages that can cause the user to see, hear, and feel stimuli differently, and to exhibit slower reflexes and a poor sense of balance. When the body is functioning normally, the cerebellum compares the actual movement with the intended movement and then signals the motor cortex to make any necessary corrections. In this way, the
