Assignment description: According to Penelope Eckert in Jocks and Burnouts (1989), high school students communicate their belonging to different social categories through their manners of speech, dress, where they hang out, and the kinds of activities they participate in. Eckert locates U.S. high schools as a fertile site for ethnographic investigation because she finds that adolescents create polarizing social groups representative of the larger culture. For this assignment you will watch either The Breakfast Club (1985) or The Outsiders (1983).* These films provide fictionalized accounts of the high school experience in the 1980s and the 1960s.
