Comm 211 Pre-test notes: - Longitudinal study: observing the same phenomenon over time - Trend: tracks a variable across time by looking at surveys from diff. times - Cohort: examines a specific group over time (not neccess. Same exact ppl) - Panel: same exact people over time - Mediating vs. Moderating variables - Criteria for nomothetic causality: - 1. Correlation scatterplot must have SOME correlating line - 2. Time-order must establish IV occurred before DV - cant establish time-order from a cross-sectional study UNLESS your IV is something very stable (gender, parents educational level, nationality…) - 3. Nonspuriousness researchers must claim to have ‘controlled for’ a variable in order to demonstrate nonspuriousness…if they don’t mention it, they didn’t - Necessary cause MUST be present for the effect to follow…but not just that - A sufficient cause guarantees the effect if present - UNIT OF ANALYSIS IS USUALLY INDIVIDUALS - Unit of analysis generally = unit of observation
