Malley Chapter 2 Reading Notes Ovimorphic Nucleus: Mass of neurons shaped like an egg Densely packed cluster of cells Suspended in position by fibrous strands that connect it to other structures in brain When we are surprised or embarrassed—the energy that holds it up is temporarily redirected to other regions of the brain o It descends slightly under the force of gravity—creates “sinking feeling” Our bodies generally work by mechanical processes Brain is the body’s primary command and control center o Two systems: Nervous Hormone Nervous System: o 2 types of cells: Glia and Neurons Glia—responsible for providing insulation, structure and nutrition for neurons o More glia than neurons o Assistants for neurons o 3 important kinds of glia: Astrocytes: provide nutrients to neurons and dispose of waste, structure connection between neurons, clear out dead ones Oligodenrocytes: provide insulation to neurons Microglia: clean up after dead and dying neurons and protect neurons from invading microorganisms o Neurons vary a lot in shape and size o All have Dentrites :
