7/1/10 Anthro 101 Two Tasks of anthropological descriptions: 1) Making the strange familiar Provide interpretation/understanding of the unfamiliar—beyond realm of previous experience/knowledge/comfor/history/awareness 2) Making the familiar strange Provide an interpretation/understanding of something so uncommon to one’s experience, or so engrained in one’s habits/every day life that it usually remains unnoticed, appears natural, or goes without saying. Ex: saying a word over and over until it doesn’t sound like a word anymore and you cant spell it Margeret Meed —tried to show that the things that we thought were universal aren’t universal Field work in the samoan islands with young girls Showed that they didn’t have the angst of adolescence that we see here Cultural example—proves that what we think is natural, isn’t natural.
