Generative system: phonology and syntax Hierarchical structure Constrained infinity Universal (for humans) Unique (to humans) Capacity to make grammaticality judgments learned incidentally through exposure Notes: Even though there’s an infinite number of sentences, a lot are ruled out As long as we have a community of humans, we have language Learn it incidentally through exposure- no training required Not only species that communication, but ours is unique because it has generative compatible capacities How does music compare? Maybe- Generative system: phonology + syntax Yes- hierarchical structure Yes-constrained infinity Yes-universal (for humans) *Maybe-unique (to humans) Yes- capacity to make grammaticality judgments learned incidentally through exposure Notes: Not exactly same hierarchical structure, but similar idea
