Developmental Psychology: The Lifespan Perspective What is development? A process of age related  changes that occurs across the lifespan. Six assumptions of the lifespan perspective:    1. Development is life long   2.  Development is multidimensional Ø Multiple forces (ex. genes, biology, environment) Ø Multiple domains » Physical (hormones, brain functions) » Cognitive (how we reason, changes in memory) » Social (who we want to be with, how we interact) » Emotional (what makes us feel good/bad and how we respond)

Assumptions of the Life-Span Perspective cont. 3. Development is multidirectional -A joint expression of growth and decline. 4. Development is plastic (open to change) 5. Development involves growth and maintenance 6. Influences on development -  Normative influences  –similar for individuals in a  particular age group -  Historical influences  - similar for individuals in a  certain generation at a formative time in their lives  -  Non normative influences  - unusual occurrences -  major impact but not applicable to many people
