Preschooler’s Tasks & Goals Developmental task (Erikson) =  Initiative vs. Guilt  (3-5 years) (Conflict that must be resolved) § Conflict around desire to take  initiative and guilt about initiatives  that are met with criticism and  hinder others § Successful resolution:  purpose  – a  balance between one’s initiative and  willingness to cooperate with  others.

Play – The Main Activity Rough-and-tumble play  – shoving, wrestling, and  hitting, but in which no actual harm is intended;  characteristic of boys. Fantasy (pretend) play  – making up and acting out  a scenario Collaborative pretend play  – Fantasy play in which  children work together to develop and act out  scenes…now have theory of mind at age 4 and  are able to do this
