Introductory Remarks Paper examines how family friendly policies impact mothers’ wages. Mainstream economic theory predicts wage penalty for workers who  desire family friendly policies. U.S.: workers with access to such policies tend to be in higher- prestige and higher-earnings occupations. This paper focuses on access to maternity leave and ability to control  one’s schedule. Why is this topic important? Family friendly policies can provide parents  with the flexibility and time off that they need to balance their work  responsibilities with their commitment to their family.
