Notes 4/22/09 American Foreign Policy and Vietnam Vietnam becomes an issue right after WWII in the context of decolonialization many of the colonists thought that since the war was fought to free Europe, then the European colonies should be freed too However, the European colonies in Africa and Asia are the key to the European countries power, so the colonies are going to remain Vietnam is part of French Indochina Vietnamese nationalists assumed they would be freed after the war because the Vietnamese fought against the Japanese When France does not free the Vietnamese, they turn around and fight back at the French Vietnamese are also Communists leader- Ho Chi Minh (HCM) VietMinh- his Vietnamese nationalist Organization In America at this time, the second Red Scare is scaring Americans (AKA McCarthyism) McCarthyism- opportunities to think outside the box are limited because you would be considered Communist 1950 Joseph McCarthy- announces that he has a list of state department officials who are communists (Yes there are communists in the American Government spying on the U.S. for the Russians) The U.S. is bankrolling the French operation to stay in power in Vietnam As the French keep suffering, we send them more money, not soldiers
