History of Linguistics -Folk Theories of Language language ideologies popular conception that doesn ʼ t get subjected to scientific analysis or criticism ex. unclear writing = unclear mind. the inability to speak grammatically means lesser intelligence. if you can ʼ t spell you must be stupid. people are bilingual are smarter than monolinguists. Romance language is sexy. Translation is simple. How do folk theories influence your thinking? How are folk theories tied up with local cultures. just because two people speak the same language doesn ʼ t mean they won ʼ t misunderstand each other The assumptions people make about language is circumscribing language. language is grammar and vocabulary. these false assumptions lead to problems: people who believe this about language tend to put others at deficit this idea is happening a lot in America these days -Sir William Jones- a historical linguist was concerned with where language came from
