How Do Attitudes Guide Behavior Attitudes: the evaluation of objects, events, or ideas Shaped by social context and play an important role in how we evaluate and interact with other people a) We Form Attitudes through Experience and Socialization o Direct experience of or exposure to things provides information that shapes at tidies o People develop negative attitudes about new objects more quickly than they develop positive attitudes o Greater exposure, greater he/she tends to link it (Robert Zajonc); more exposure effect , ex: people prefer reversed photos of themselves corresponds to what they see in the mirror while friends and family prefer true photos o Attitudes can be conditioned, advertisers use classical conditioning (attractive celebrity with a product), operant conditioning (rewards) o Attitudes are shaped through socialization; Caregivers, media, teachers, religious leaders, and politicians guide our attitudes o Society socializes basic attitudes, including what is edible a) Behaviors Are Consistent With Strong Attitudes o Attitudes are adaptive, guide behaviors o Stronger and more personally relevant the attitude, the more likely it will predict behavior, be consistent over time, and be resistant to change o More specific the attitude, the more predictice it is o Attitudes formed through direct experience also tend to
