Poelker 1 Ty Poelker Dr. Jacky Dumas ENGL 2321 8 February 2011 Concept Identifications 1. The “until” construction- The “until” construction implies that everything was good until. ..This literary device is used in epics. The “until” construction lulls the reader into a false sense of comfort until something dramatic suddenly happens. This is used effectively in Beowulf when Grendel attacks the mead hall. There is a lot of background between the first attack on Heorot and the initial battle between the hero and the demon. Prior to line seven hundred three the text gives approximately five hundred lines of background ending with, “The truth is clear: Almighty God rules over mankind and always has.”(700-703) This lulls the reader into a sense of comfort before the attack. 2. The Lord-Thane relationship-The Lord-Thane relationship is a mutual agreement between a Lord and an underling. The Lord has a duty to provide for the underling and the underling has a duty to serve the Lord. An ideal master-servant relationship has these qualities. This concept is evident with the relationship between Beowulf and Wiglaf. Lines two thousand six hundred and twenty six of the poem through two
