Reconstruction   In 1865 the United States ends a very bloody and costly civil war that neither side  thought would turn out the way it did. The war came about because both sides  wanted to answer the questions that the constitution. Could a state leave the union once it joined? What is the status of slavery? After north win they get to answer these questions North says you can’t leave the union (but how would the south come into the  union?) And no slavery (what would the blacks be considered? Citizens, not citizens?) Was the first total war - in that a regions economy, moral, workforce, etc. becomes a  target for the opposition   1. Major players a. White southerners 1. Most had the attitude that the war had been fought and had been  lost and slavery was over and they accept that the south would be a part  of the US 2. Most had ideas on how they were going to come back into the union 1. They want the south to just come back in, no questions  asked and no demanding 2. They also want to determine the labor institution that  replaces slavery (they accept that slavery has ended but they  wanted to decide what would replace slavery) b. Blacks 1. Had attitudes similar to white southerners 2. Acknowledge that war is over and slavery is done, like white  southerners 3. They have ideas for what the south will be like but they are different  from white southerners and they want full citizenship rights from  reconstruction 1. full citizenship rights - equality under the law, voting, running  for public office, education, land ownership 2. most of the slave population was illiterate and they wanted  education 3. land ownership 1. the old school idea of liberty and freedom was in order  to be free you must own your own land

2. They wanted farm land - the south was an agrarian  economy, so if they were going to make a living, it was going  to be from farming - they thought that in order to be truly free,  you should own a farm a. If you didn't own your own land, then you had  to work for someone else and this even affected voting c. White Northerners 1. Don’t know what they want, keep changing there minds 2. There are very diverse opinions 3. In the north there were 2 parties Republicans(majority) and  Democrats(minority) 4. Democrats- based the war on preserving the union, law and order,  etc. - once war was over thought no big deal, mission accomplished  and just let the south back in 5. Republicans- were the dominant party in the north and wanted the  south to learn a lesson, not sure what they want but, (they said the  civil war happened because the south got out of control and they
