Reconstruction 4 threads/Themes o Government Power Everything in your life is somehow affected by gvt. Americans have historically asked for more gvt. o Foreign Policy US Is most powerful country in the world o Culture Producer culture in US 1865 Produced Farmers, simple housing, Made most stuff, Produced own food Barn was usually a lot bigger than the home Consumer Culture Today Work/ earn money/ buy "crap" o Race Relations Looks like a roller coaster o Civil War ends in 1865 o Sectional Conflict doesn't end North Says the south needs to learn a lesson South Says they need to be accepted back in the union Louisiana is a good example of continued fighting o Civil War comes about because of issues not addressed in the constitution Slavery What is the nature of the Union o Can a state make the decision to leave the Union o North Wins so they make decisions Once a state joins the union, they can't leave the Union Slavery ends o Northerners decide that its such a problem they go ahead and get rid of Slavery o Ends with the 13th Amendment o African American Status Citizens? Partial Citizens? o Dred Scott Case 1857 Supreme court rules that blacks are not citizens of the U.S. o How was the South gonna come back into the Union Are changes gonna be forced on the south o What is the role of the South gonna be in the Union o 3 Basic Groups- All want different things White Southerners o Come into reconstruction with these understandings o Know the war is over and know they have lost o Recognize Slavery is dead/ done away with o What they want o Control their destiny
