1. The theme of Chapter 9 is that political discourse is being eroded by the medium of television. Postman uses this chapter to explain the changing landscape of politics. 2. Malapropisms- the substitution of a word for a word with a similar sound, in which the resulting phrase makes no sense but often creates a comic effect; Howard Cosell often used malapropisms to enhance his own comedic abilities by switching around words with similar sounds in common phrases. Pomposities- puffed up with vanity; used with describing Howard Cosell the sports journalist; The pompous athlete was loudly proclaiming his surety of winning the game because he thought he other team was sub-par. Artifice- a crafty but underhanded deception; Show business uses artifices to underhandedly deceive audiences with images to sell people, products, and ideas. Paradigm- a pattern or example; Television commercials have become the paradigm for how every other discourse operates. Cartels- a consortium of independent organizations formed to limit
