Rivalry within the PC Industry: Apple was the pioneer in PC industry but the credit for bringing PCs into mainstream goes to IBM. In 80s and early 90s growth was driven by lower prices and expanding capabilities. In 2000s the growth was propelled by Internet demand and emerging markets such as China and Middle East. Revenue growth failed to keep pace with volume growth due to technological advancement and steep fall in the prices of hardware components. All these led to a fall in ASP.HP, Dell, Acer and Lenovo account for 55 % of worldwide shipments. Acer and Lenovo have taken the acquisition route to gain prominence. Both these companies have big presence in the emerging economies like India and China. HP saw strong growth through its retail presence through 110000 worldwide outlets. Dell saw good success in the corporate market through a combination of direct sales and build to order manufacturing.
