As the story progresses, the narrator continues to become even more mentally sick even though its seems as though she is getting better physically. 2. How does the wallpaper function as a symbol in this story? What do you conclude about the narrator when she becomes increasingly interested in the women she finds there? The yellow wallpaper functions as a symbol in this story by representing the narrator’s mental confusion and sickness. When the narrator becomes increasingly interested in the women that she finds in the wallpaper where she is staying, it heightens her curiosity and causes her to do crazy things such as peel the wallpaper off of the wall. The women in the wallpaper causes her to mental health to worsen, even though her physical helps appears to be getting better.
