Purpose: The purpose of this experiment was to study extraction; in part A, the extraction of a non-polar organic liquid was studied. In part B, the extraction of a colored polar organic solid from water was studied and finally, in part C, washing took place to purify an organic solid contaminated with a colored impurity. Procedure: Part A: In Trial 1 of this portion of the experiment, a 5.02g samle of dodecane and 25 mL of water were placed in a separatory funnel for extraction. After the layers were mixed and allowed to separate, the aqueous layer was drained and the dodecane, the organic layer, was collected in a tared container. The layers were visibly separate in the funnel; the organic layer rested on top of the aqueous layer. This observation is verified by the densities of the substances; measured in gm/cm 3 dodecane has a density of .75 and water has a density of 1 1 .
