1 Smoking: American Biggest Health Crisis In “Why Stop Smoking? Let’s Get Clinical,” William F. Harrison argues that smoking, with its terrible consequences, is the No.1 health crisis facing the United States. Similarly, Jane E. Brody, in “’Diabesity,’ A crisis in an Expanding Country,” claims that obesity, as a fast emerging epidemic, is the most serious health problem in this country. According to Harrison and Brody, it is quite true that smoking and obesity both are extremely harmful to people’s health and cause a high death rate. However, as the degree of damage to human health is concerned, smoking is the greatest health killer to Americans. In terms of medicine, smoking causes more diseases than obesity does. According to Harrison, for a smoker, “the probability of developing one or more of the major complications of smoking is 100 percent (Harrison 339).” These complications include various chronic illnesses, serious diseases like cancer of vital organs, and “rapid aging of skin and connective tissues (Harrison 339).” The gravity of the illness is based on how heavy a smoker is. Even if you are a light smoker, you cannot escape from a minor smoking illness. But for an overweight person, he is not 100 percent unhealthy; he can be both “fit and fat.” Jennifer A.
